A symbol of peace and world unity, the modern Olympics took shape in Greece, the birthplace of the ancient games. The Olympics are divided into Winter and Summer games and take place every four years. Of the numerous sports represented, there are currently 35 different sports (such as skating), 53 disciplines (sub-categories like figure skating and speed skating) and more than 400 events.

During the Olympics, new sports are introduced or represented as potential candidates for future games, while others are removed (such as polo and tug of war). These new demonstration sports are usually meant to promote a local sport of the host country or to test audience interest. Several of these sports (such as baseball and curling) are subsequently added to the official program.

No matter how well a host country welcomes the world or how spectacular the Olympic events unravel, the true heroes of the competition are the Olympians. All Olympians from participating countries are regarded with the utmost respect and admiration. And, in true competitive style, gold medals represent the epitome of the event.

Although it is impossible to mention all of the great Olympians, below are a few outstanding athletes that deserve honorable mention.

• Steve Redgrave is the only Olympian to have won a gold medal at five consecutive games (from Los Angeles in 1984 to Sydney in 2000).

• Fanny Blankers-Koen (a.k.a. the ‘Flying Dutchwoman’) was voted the female athlete of the last century. At 30 years old, Blankers-Koen was a mother of two when she won four gold medals at the 1948 London games.

• Dawn Fraser took home three consecutive gold medals for the 100m women’s swimming event at three successive Olympics from 1956-64.

• Nadia Comaneci was the first gymnast to achieve a perfect score at Montreal 1976. She won nine medals (five gold, three silver and one bronze) in the Montreal and Moscow games.

• Muhammad Ali achieved the gold medal in the light-heavyweight division at Rome 1960. Despite suffering from Parkinson’s disease, Ali returned to the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 to light the Olympic torch

• Michael Johnson was virtually unbeatable for most of the 1990s. He won a total of five gold medals during his career, retiring at the top in Sydney 2000. He still holds the world record for the 400m-run.

The Olympics embody much more than merely wining gold medals and competing for world titles. They are a gathering of the world’s greatest Olympians in a celebration of peace. The Olympics have continuously brought the world together every four years; political issues are set aside, and proud Olympians demonstrate their incredible power and dedication to their country.

Bill France organized a meeting of car owners, drivers, and mechanics in 1947, which led to the formation of NASCAR, the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing. He probably did not know that the American public and corporate sponsors would make NASCAR the fastest growing sport with over 10 million fans in attendance each year.

The Winston Cup Series starts the season in February with the Daytona 500 and ends the season in November, making this the sport with the longest season.

NASCAR posters have the ability to capture the roar of the engines and the excitement of the crowds. Not only will you find posters here, you’ll find NASCAR posters of some of the greatest NASCAR drivers of past and present. Below are some exceptional drivers who are all winners of the Daytona 500.

Richard Petty: Petty won a total of seven series championships during his 35-year career. He is the indisputable “King” of stock car racing with 200 NASCAR Winston Cup Series wins. Petty also has the honor of having the most outstanding season in NASCAR history when he won 27 of 48 races and finished second seven times in cruising to the 1967 title.

Dale Earnhardt: One of the most talented drivers in the history of NASCAR racing, Earnhardt won his seventh series championship in 1994. He is the only driver in NASCAR’s history to win the Rookie of the Year award and the series championship in back to back seasons (1979 and 1980 respectively). On the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, an accident claimed his life. He is ranked first on the all-time winnings list with an astounding $41,538,362.

Edward Glenn ‘Fireball’ Roberts: May be the greatest driver to never win a NASCAR Winston Cup title, Roberts accumulated 32 wins, including the 1962 Daytona 500. His career spanned 15 seasons before his untimely death in 1964 from injuries in an accident at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Jeff Gordon: Gordon made his NASCAR Winston Cup Series debut in the 1992 season finale. Since, he has won three NASCAR Winston Cup Series championships (1995 and 1997-98), 52 NASCAR Winston Cup Series victories and the 1993 NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year Award. He was named Driver of the Year in 1995 and 1997. Gordon was also named the National Motorsports Press Association’s and Eastern Motorsports Press Association “Driver of the Year” in 1995 and the “True Value Man of the Year” in 1996.

Soccer is the most watched and most played sport in the world, enjoyed by billions of people. The last World Cup in 2002 was watched by an estimated 33 million people for almost 27 days, making it the most watched single sports event in recorded history. This may be a reason for the countless number of soccer posters available. Whether you’re looking for soccer posters of past heroes or present players, you’re bound to find a poster of your choice. I hope you enjoy my soccer posters as much as I enjoy the game!

The effects of World War II prevented the World Cup from being played in 1942 and 1946.

Elite soccer players have made the World Cup their stage and some have made their World Cup performances very memorable. Here are just a few of the more memorable players from World Cup history.

Roberto Baggio – (Roberto Baggio’s homepage) Played in his first World Cup in 1990 in front of his country of Italy. He and his trademark ponytail lead the Azzurri to the finals in 1994, only to be heartbroken and defeated in penalty kicks. He was named 1993’s World Footballer of the Year and European Footballer of the Year.

Pele - Brazil’s greatest export, Pele is credited with making football famous. Pelé played in four World Cups: Sweden 1958, Chile 1962, England 1966, and Mexico 1970. He scored 12 goals in 14 World Cup matches. Pelé was named Athlete of the Century by the world’s combined National Olympic Committees in 1999, though he never played in the Olympics himself. He officially retired in 1977.

David Beckham – Beckham started playing with English super club Manchester United in 1994 and was recently traded to La Liga’s Real Madrid for a transfer fee of 35 million euros. Becks is known for his spectacular field skills and good looks. He was recently named captain of the English national team, after service as vice-captain.

Maradona – He played in his first World Cup tournament at the age of 22 in 1982 when he was already considered one of the best footballers in the world. But four years later he led the Argentine national team to glory, as captain. In all, he played 21 games in four World Cup appearances. 1995 presented him with the Golden Ball award. His goal in the ’86 World Cup against England was chosen as the best goal ever in football history. In 2000, he was elected FIFA’s Best Football Player of the Century.

Origins of the Skateboard
While no one is exactly sure when skateboards were first invented, one thing is for sure – skateboarding has come a long way since its less than glamorous beginnings! Originally built like a self-propelled scooter with four roller skate wheels attached to a two-by-four, the first ‘real’ skateboards of the 1950s were created when the scooter’s pushbar was removed, leaving nothing remaining but a board and four wheels. Purportedly invented by bored West coast surfers looking for a way to pass the time as they waited for the waves to start picking up, the first skateboarders were known as “sidewalk surfers”.

As skateboarding gained in popularity throughout the fifties, the first Roller Derby Skateboard was put up for sale to the public in 1959 only to be followed by a slew of other companies in the sixties including Larry Stevenson’s Makaha and Hobie Alter’s Hobie.

From 1960 to 1963 over fifty million skateboards were sold with the skateboarding industry establishing a firm hold on America’s youth culture that has yet to be loosened. Still, like any fad, skateboarding had its critics and many safety experts pronounced the sport to be dangerous, urging parents not to encourage their children in such an unsafe endeavour; as quickly as it had began, skateboarding was relegated to the sidelines. But skateboarding was not to be left out in the cold for long.

Early Skateboard Tricks
With the invention of the urethane wheel in 1973, skateboarding was revolutionized as the new wheels provided better traction and speed to allow for more complicated and stylish skateboard tricks including Larry Stevenson’s famous kicktail maneuver.

The seventies saw continued growth for skateboarding with the construction of concrete skateparks, increasing numbers of professional skateboarders, cylindrical pipes, and specialty magazines.

One of the more important developments was the invention of the “ollie” by Alan “Ollie” Gelfand in the late seventies, a now basic maneuver that is the foundation for 60% to 80% of other skateboarding tricks. Other major advances of the time included tricks like the aerial, the invert and the kickturn.

Tony Hawk, Superstar
By the eighties, skateboarding was once again in an upswing, as street skating became all the rage and stars like Tony Hawk entered the scene and changed the face of the sport forever.

Born in 1968 in San Diego, California, Tony Hawk is still probably the most recognized name in the industry even though he no longer competes professionally. And with a line of clothing, books and video games all under his belt, it’s no wonder a whole generation of skaters have plastered their walls with skateboarding posters of their idol, Mr. Hawk. Thanks to Tony Hawk and other stars of his era, skateboarding was popularized in a way never before imagined and the sport has continued to grow in leaps and bounds.

With the establishment of ESPN’s first Extreme Games in Rhode Island in 1995, skateboarding solidified its position as a major financial draw and national sport that continues to exert a heavy influence on today’s youth culture regarding everything from fashion to music.

When I started collecting vintage sports posters I searched for members of the Sports Hall of Fame. My first three posters were classic baseball heroes including Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson and Joe Dimaggio. Since then I’ve made every sports hero I grew up idolizing a part of my vintage sports posters collection.

Limited Edition Prints
Besides poster collecting I’m always on the lookout for limited edition prints of my favorite sports heroes. Limited editions are always numbered and signed by the artist.

Framing
Vintage posters and prints should always be framed to sustain their value.

   • Unsigned posters and prints should be dry mounted.
   • Dry mounting is a better alternative to using a spray-on adhesive.
   • Dry mounting permanently attaches the poster or print to a stiff backing.

Any limited edition prints should be matted and mounted on materials that are acid free so that prints are not damaged over time. The matting around the print doesn’t just decorate the print it prevents the print from coming into contact with the glass or plastic covering.

Protective Coverings
Keep in mind that just because you have used a protective covering over your sports posters or prints they are still vulnerable to the elements. If you want to display your vintage sports posters collection make sure to keep them away from direct sunlight and humidity. UV rays can destroy posters and prints over time.

There are certain types of protective coverings that cut out UV rays but they are a lot more expensive. If you are willing to spend the money, then go for it, if not be careful where you display your collection.

Collection Tips

   • According to Askmen.com the number 1 must-have vintage poster is the Monaco – August 1937. Race cars are huge sellers among sports collectors.
   • Most sports personalities oblige through-the-mail autograph requests as a part of their public relations. In most cases, they will provide a signed photo of themselves or sign items you send them.

This is where I keep of all my other sports posters. Here you will find posters of golf, tennis and wrestling (if you like wrestling, check out my WWE Divas page).

Let’s start with tennis. Tennis star Anna Kournikova brings more than just excitement to the game of tennis. She brings beauty, grace and a winning attitude that envelopes all tennis fans. Pete Sampres, Andre Aggassi, Venus and Serena Williams and Monica Seles are just a few more popular tennis stars.

Football is the all-American sport. Football is such a powerful game that grown men take time off work so they could enjoy this exciting sport. In Green Bay, the amount of people who take time off work to watch their hometeam Packers is astronomical.

Superbowl XXXVII
When Tony Dungy was let go from his coaching position for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the team found new life with John Grueden. Who would’ve thought he would face his former team the Oakland Raiders at Superbowl XXXVII where Tampa Bay secured their win with a final score of 48-21.

WWE PostersGolf has become America’s favorite pastime. No other game is as graceful as golf. Tiger Woods is now probably the most recognized athlete in sports history.

WWE, although considered more of an entertainment sideshow, is bigger today than it has ever been. Constant sold out arenas make it virtually impossible to see this event live. Stone Cold, The Rock, Kurt Angle and Triple H are only a few names in this larger-than-life extravaganza. Wrestling became even bigger when Vince McMahon bought out the WCW and merged the two companies together and his attempt to destroy his creation by injecting it with a lethal dose of poison known as the NWO failed. Although wrestling has bred many larger than life super strongmen, it has also produced some of the sexiest women in the world, the WWE Divas.

WWE Divas like Trish, Molly and Terri all have a special place in my collection of RAW sports posters.

Molly Holly - Formerly known as Nora Greenwald isn’t in the ring as much anymore but she has said on many occasions that she really misses the action, especially her matches against Trish and Ivory. She still believes a RAW feud between herself and Stephanie McMahon would be the one to end all feuds.

Trish Stratus – Before she became a WWE Diva she was on her way to pursuing a career in medicine. She was on her way to becoming doctor Trish Stratigias when she discovered wrestling. She’s one smart lady with a killer body who’s wrestled diva greats such as Chyna, Lita and Stephanie McMahon.

She is a hot commodity in the world of wresting who wants to have it all. WWE Divas posters featuring Trish Stratus are huge sellers as her fan base grows and grows.

Terri - Her days as the Hardcore Champion are just a memory she’s still in action as RAW’s leading female backstage interviewer.

WWE Divas like Sable, Torrie and Stephanie are on my A list of favorite Smackdown wrestling posters.

Torrie Wilson – This former Miss Galaxy in the fitness competitions was also a nutrition major in university. She stole the show when she debuted on the WWE in June 2001.

Sable – Every man wants her and every woman would love to be her! She made her comeback to the WWE in a big way. She is the only woman to have graced the cover of Playboy Magazine not once, but twice in the same year.

Stephanie McMahon – She’s proved she’s a woman who gets what she wants! As the General Manager of Smackdown she has put the war with her father aside and is now focusing on making her show the best in sports entertainment.

Triple H, The Rock, and Stone Cold are wrestling icons that have raised the bar in WWE and enjoyed the type of fame that few others will ever experience in the business.

My collection of WWE posters is compiled of the greatest wrestlers both past and present. I have posters dating back to when Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and The Iron Sheik were at their prime. Wrestling has evolved since that time but the posters themselves remain priceless.

Here are some of the wrestling superstars that have been added to my WWE posters collection.

Kane – In 1997 the world was introduced to The Undertaker’s brother Kane. These two rivals fought in the first ever Inferno Match. In less than a year Kane became the WWE Champion defeating Stone Cold Steve Austin at the 1998 King of the Ring. This seven-foot-tall big red monster has proven he’s a force to be reckoned with.

Goldberg - This superstar from the WCW captivated fans in the late 90’s as he defeated Hulk Hogan for the title at the Georgia dome. We thought we saw the last of Goldberg when the WCW was bought out by the WWE. After years of exile he made his comeback at Wrestlemania XIX and has since held the title as heavyweight championship of the WWE.

Scott Steiner –Big Poppa Pump, The Big Bad Booty Daddy, The Genetic Freak and Freakzilla are all names Scott Steiner has earned in his career at the WWE. When he came onto the scene he was a hot commodity. RAW general manager Eric Bischoff and Stephanie McMahon from Smackdown waged war to bring him over to their sides. At 6’2, 255 pounds he has a body to kill and has become the suplex master of the WWE.

Smackdown

When Brock Lesnar defeated The Rock at SummerSlam he became the youngest undisputed champion the WWE has ever produced. He proved he was a powerhouse when he defeated the 500 pound Big Show finishing him off with his signature move, the deadly F-5.

Kurt Angle – This Olympic Gold medalist from Pittsburgh has won it all! He took the King of the Ring title in 2000 and has since taken the WWE Championship from The Rock at No Mercy and beating out Stone Cold Steve Austin in 2001. He also teamed up with the departed Chris Benoit to win the tournament and become the tag-team champions.

Eddie Guerrero won the Intercontinental Championship at Backlash upon his return to the WWE. Known for his signature finisher Frog Splash move he’s been known to use whatever means possible to win his matches. May he rest in peace as well.
